In biblical terms, the luminaries are the celestial bodies that provide light, primarily the sun and the moon. The creation of luminaries is described in Genesis 1:14-19, where God creates them on the fourth day to separate day from night and to serve as signs for seasons, days, and years. The passage states that God made two great lights: the greater light (the sun) to govern the day and the lesser light (the moon) to govern the night.
